Phil Hay issues £1.5m Middlesbrough update on Leeds United midfielder Sam Greenwood
Phil Hay has revealed the Middlesbrough buy option for Leeds United midfielder Sam Greenwood who’s joined them on loan this season.
The Athletic journalist wrote on Monday (9 October) that Boro can exercise the option to buy the 21-year-old for just £1.5million.
This is the exact amount the Whites paid to secure his services back in 2020 from Arsenal.
Not enough
Despite being only 21, Greenwood already has 25 Premier League appearances under his belt and enjoyed an extended run in the first team last season.
He might not be top-flight level yet but within a couple of years, an argument can be made over him being a regular for a lower-half side.
Selling him for a little over a million is not exactly good business and perhaps Leeds agreed upon it as he’s not highly rated by Daniel Farke.
Jesse Marsch was perhaps a bigger fan of the player and it can be said that Marcelo Bielsa was too, but there remains a good chance Boro exercise the option to buy.
They’ve got one whole season to see how things pan out in the Championship before spending the money on Greenwood.
Right now, they’re in a relegation battle of sorts and will be focusing on that more than anything else.
In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay claims that big European clubs have been keeping tabs on a Whites player for a while and are still willing to sign him.
