Leeds United goalkeeper and Spurs target Illan Meslier is now reportedly the most valuable player at the club amid growing transfer interest.
According to the Athletic journalist Phil Hay, there are multiple clubs looking at the Frenchman but Tottenham Hotspur are one of them.
With Hugo Lloris now in his mid-thirties, they could have a long-term succession in mind with the 22-year-old believed to be on their list.
Speaking on the Phil Hay Show, Hay said (6:30), “It’s quite interesting of all the clubs that are looking at Meslier, I think it’s fair to say that he now has replaced Raphinha and Phillips as probably the highest value asset in the squad at Leeds.
“If clubs are bidding for everybody at Elland Road, he would command the highest fee.
“It’s quite interesting that Spurs are one of the clubs looking at him as Lloris is getting into his mid-30s now and he is out of contract in 2024 and you would assume that Tottenham would now be looking at a succession plan for him.
“Pretty eventful time for Meslier but this season he has looked better than he ever has and has been a top class goalkeeper.”
After the sales of Phillips and Raphinha, Leeds do not need to raise money for at least two more summers so selling anyone is not a priority.
However, if Meslier keeps developing at the level he is, the interest in his services is not going to reduce and we’re not surprised to see Spurs being in for him.
Since Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici’s arrival, they have made a lot of efficient signings, and there is a lot of logic behind pursuing Meslier to replace Lloris.
Leeds surely will not want to lose Meslier but every player has a price and in case a good enough bid comes in for him, they will be compelled into selling him.
The Frenchman could look to leave for a club like Spurs as they have a world class manager and also play in the Champions League.
Hopefully, he stays put at Elland Road for at least the next two seasons and becomes the sort of player that can command the highest-ever transfer fee paid for a goalkeeper.
