Phil Hay highlights Leeds United transfer strategy under Jesse Marsch compared to Marcelo Bielsa
Phil Hay believes that Jesse Marsch is going to be much more relaxed in terms of his recruitments at Leeds United compared to Marcelo Bielsa.
The Argentine had a very specific type of player he wanted at the club which saw the Whites do no business in January despite the glaring lack of depth.
However, the American will look at a wider pool of players going in the summer transfer window.
Speaking on the Phil Hay Show, Hay said (24:11), “One of the things that you’re going to see is that the pool of players Marsch is open to signing will be far broader than the pool of players that Bielsa would be open to signing.
“I don’t think Marsch will be having such strict parameters for what he wants. He’ll have a fairly good idea of what suits his system but it was always a very fixed idea with Bielsa.”
Good move
Bielsa was extremely dogmatic in terms of transfers and that was fine as long as the club had unlimited money to back him.
In the first season back up, they gave him what he wanted and that saw them finish in a remarkable 9th place.
However, the summer after, funds were tight and Bielsa was unwilling to compromise on the type of players he wanted.
This saw the Whites make just two major summer signings and none in January after numerous midfielders were vetoed by the Argentine.
Had Marsch been in charge, he would have probably said yes to a stopgap option rather than bring someone in from the academy to put in a shift until May.
We’re hoping that Victor Orta does not have another disastrous summer and instead gives Marsch what he needs to be a success at Elland Road.
