Phil Hay expects Patrick Bamford to sign a new Leeds United contract before next season gets underway.
The striker has just over a year remaining on his current deal but has proved himself a Premier League player with 14 goals this season.
And Hay expects the club to sit down with Bamford in the foreseeable future in order to get him tied down for a few more years.
In a Q&A for The Athletic, Hay wrote, “In terms of Bamford, I’d expect Leeds to tie him to a new deal before next season starts. I’d be surprised if that’s a problem.”
Getting business done early
This is a very positive development as Bamford has undoubtedly been one of our best players this year.
At 27 he could be coming into his peak years too so we are keen for him to continue scoring goals for Leeds.
14 goals and talk of an England call-up recently may have sparked transfer interest in him from Premier League rivals.
They may try and lure Bamford away and with his contract expiring in 2022 Leeds would not be in a strong negotiating position.
Getting him signed now would show he is committed to the club while deterring interest from elsewhere.
Along with Bamford, Tyler Roberts, Pablo Hernandez and Adam Forshaw all have deals that expire in 2022.
The futures of the latter two look in doubt but Roberts has impressed in his recent run in the team. As a result, we are also keen for Roberts to be tied down to a new contract soon.
