Phil Hay drops major Patrick Bamford update for Leeds United v Southampton

Patrick Bamford will miss the Championship playoff final between Leeds United and Southampton due to injury, Phil Hay has confirmed.

The Whites striker suffered a knee injury during the 4-3 win over Middlesbrough earlier this month and has been absent ever since.

Daniel Farke was hopeful that he would return after missing the 4-0 aggregate win over Norwich in the playoff final, but Bamford has failed to recover and will “definitely” miss the game.

Leeds United dealt huge injury blow for playoff final

It’s a difficult problem for the Elland Road faithful to deal with, because the number nine position has been an issue all season.

Crysencio Summerville has been the top goalscorer this season across all competitions, while Daniel James follows behind him, but all of Bamford, Joel Piroe and Mateo Joseph have chipped in too form up front.

Bamford had been the top man in the last months of the season and has registered some important goals, but Farke will be gutted that he can’t now call upon him in attack.

Joel Piroe has scored some huge goals in recent weeks, including the final game of the season against Southampton and in the 4-0 win over Norwich in the playoff semi-final too.

But now Southampton will know that he will be starting that is a disadvantage to Leeds, and they will need the Dutch striker to come forward and step up once again if he can.
