Phil Hay drops hints at how Leeds could line up v Wolves

Leeds United will face Wolverhampton Wanderers in their next Premier League game on Saturday at Elland Road.

The Whites have managed only one victory thus far and Marcelo Bielsa’s side will be looking to bounce back to winning ways after suffering a 1-0 defeat against Southampton last week.

Bielsa has confirmed today that Kalvin Phillips is unlikely to start once again, while Leeds are missing Patrick Bamford and several key defenders as well.

A Leeds fan on Twitter (tommy_lufc) has tried to create a predicted line-up ahead of the match, where he suggested a three-man defence, with Jack Harrison and Stuart Dallas playing as wing-backs.

Phil Hay, the Athletic journalist, has responded to the tweet, saying Wolves don’t play with two strikers, which means Bielsa is likely to stick with a four-man defence.

In the follow-up tweet, he clarified Bielsa’s tactics.

Massive game

Bielsa has suggested in the press conference today that he has urged his players not to lose their confidence and hope, despite the results not going in their favour.

The Whites were outplayed by Southampton and Bielsa has pointed some of the factors why they are struggling this term, with lack of squad depth being one of them.

However, Leeds have shown time and again that they can bounce back strongly when odds are against them. Wolves are in fantastic form at the moment, having picked up three wins in a row, and without Phillips, the task won’t be easy.

Bielsa is unlikely to change his formation for this game. Hay is spot on that Leeds are likely to set up with a four-man defence, with Liam Cooper and Diego Llorente marshalling at the back.

Jamie Shackleton is expected to take the right-back role, although Dallas is equally capable of filling the void. It will be interesting to see whether Bielsa gives Pascal Struijk a chance in midfield, although the Dutchman hasn’t looked comfortable at all playing in that position.
