Phil Hay drops early Leeds United starting XI hint v Crystal Palace after huge Adam Forshaw blow
Phil Hay has insisted that Robin Koch or Mateusz Klich will partner Kalvin Phillips for Leeds United against Crystal Palace.
The Athletic journalist shared that the Yorkshire Pirlo is likely to come in and start after fully recovering from his injury.
It comes after Adam Forshaw was ruled out for the entire season, leaving Jesse Marsch with few options in midfield.
Writing in his latest piece for The Athletic, Hay shared an early hint on how the team will look at Selhurst Park.
“Robin Koch has been used quite regularly in a defensive midfield position and if Marsch had it in his head that he might try to play Forshaw and Phillips together, that can’t happen now,” he said.
“Phillips is, by a mile, best suited at Leeds to a deep-lying role and alongside him, it will have to be either Koch or Mateusz Klich. The feeling persists with Klich that he is always more effective higher up the pitch.”
This was devastating news for Forshaw after his exceptional season after his previous injury shock.
There are no doubts that Phillips simply has to start now, he is the best midfielder in this squad, and we are better with him.
It comes down to Robin Koch or Mateusz Klich then.
The obvious choice is the Polish international, who is a natural midfielder, but as Hay mentions, he is better further forward.
Playing Koch alongside Phillips would give the Whites a solid base, and that may be the best way to line up against someone such as Palace.
With Wilfried Zaha and Conor Gallagher making non-stop runs alongside the likes of Odsonne Edouard, having Koch in there could help disrupt that.
Marsch will be racking his brain for the answers, but having that solid defensive base to allow our front four all of the freedom could be a brilliant decision.
