Phil Hay drools over Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier

Phil Hay of The Athletic has showered heaps of praise on Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier while writing on his personal Twitter account.

The young French goalkeeper became the youngest goalkeeper in history to make 50 Premier League appearances.

Hay has suggested that Meslier is still “raw”, but Leeds secured a “good deal” for him at just £5m.

Hay tweeted:

A fan asked him how much Meslier is worth at the moment, and that whether £30-40 million should be a reasonable price for him.

Hay replied on Twitter: “It’s very hard to say for sure. He’s still raw but any club setting his price would put a high value on his potential.”

Fantastic achievement

Meslier is only 21 and he has a bright future ahead of him.

Marcelo Bielsa took a massive gamble last season when he made him the first-choice goalkeeper at the club, when many thought that he would sign an experienced goalkeeper instead.

It goes to show the amount of faith Bielsa has for the youngster. He has given him confidence and motivation during bad times, but the Argentine never takes the credit for his development.

Meslier is strong and courageous. He is superb at making saves and has improved on his distribution skills as well.

This season, it has been tough for him, but not having a settled back four ahead of him hasn’t helped either. Meslier is only going to get better and better.

Leeds have no plans to sell him. Hay is spot on here. Leeds can only determine a price tag for him based on his potential, considering his age, but it will definitely be on the higher side.
