Phil Hay casts doubt on whether 19y/o will feature for Leeds this season
The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has cast doubt on whether Ryan Edmondson would get into the Leeds United squad this season.
Edmondson, 19, has not made any of Marcelo Bielsa’s matchday squads this season and earlier this year had to undergo surgery on a knee injury back in February.
It was expected that Edmondson would be out for eight weeks and he is now likely to have made a full recovery and can be available for Bielsa.
However we have not seen the teenager make the bench yet and Hay has suggested in a Q&A session that he cannot see that changing any time soon.
“Honestly not sure how fit Edmondson is,” Hay said. “He needed surgery back then so he’ll have been sidelined for a little while and his match fitness will have suffered as a result.”
Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts are the only two available players in the senior squad who can play comfortably up front.
Jean-Kevin Augustin’s injury and fitness issues mean that he might not play again for Leeds this season so the third-choice striker role could be up for grabs at the moment.
Is Edmondson on Bielsa’s mind?
It’s very unlikely as he has not been selected once this season despite being a regular for the Under-23s and being named on the bench a few times by Bielsa last term.
It is definitely an odd one with him and maybe there will be some clarity on his future at Elland Road once the season is over.
He seems like the kind of player who needs to be sent out on loan so that he can further his development because if anything he has gone backwards due to not being used and his injury.
In other Leeds United news, fans are thrilled by this player’s “MOTM” display against Fulham.
