Phil Hay baffled by ‘weird’ Daniel Farke decision in Leeds United 1-0 win v Norwich

Phil Hay was left baffled at a moment that he labelled a “weird” from Leeds United in their 1-0 win over Norwich City on Wednesday (24 January).

The Whites headed into their Championship clash at Elland Road on Wednesday evening looking to close the gap between themselves and the automatic promotion spot to two points with a win.

And Daniel Farke’s men got off to the perfect start when Dan James delivered a brilliant cross for the in-form Bamford to bag his fourth goal in five games for Leeds United with a great header inside the six-yard box.

Leeds were on top for much of the first half but the second half nearly took a complete turn in performance when the Whites were strangely forced to camp inside their own half by determined Norwich, a scenario which may have been forced tactically by Farke.

And Hay shared his response on his personal Twitter account (24 January): “Really risking a Norwich equaliser here. Press has dropped off, low block, very passive. Weird.”

Very weird

The Whites have been known to completely kill teams off at Elland Road even well before the 80th minute for much of the campaign but they allowed Norwich back into proceedings in the second half when they were comfortable.

Whether it was a tactical ploy from Farke or his team were forced to adopt such a risky approach in the second half, Leeds fans will never know but it is something the German certainly isn’t known for.

Leeds got themselves into a brilliant position early in the first half when Bamford put them ahead with a brilliant header and could well have scored two more if they were potent.

Such is the gruelling nature of the Championship, teams as big as Leeds simply cannot become complacent or they will be completely punished and the Whites almost suffered that unfortunate fate.

The Canaries have been impressive in recent weeks, undergoing a stark improvement in performances and results and the Whites nearly cost themselves a crucial three points after what they did midway through that second half.
