Phil Hay baffled by controversial decision in Leeds United v Bristol City

Phil Hay was left baffled by the decision not to award Leeds United a penalty in the first half against Bristol City on Friday (2 February).

Responding to a video tweeted by Sky Sports Football, where forward Georginio Rutter appeared to be fouled by Robins defender George Tanner inside the box, the Athletic journalist said “I mean…I’d be wanting this”.

But the referee decided it wasn’t a penalty to the Whites as he waved away the 21-year-old Frenchman’s protests at Ashton Gate.

Thankfully it did not cost Leeds too dear as they defeated the Robins 1-0 at Ashton Gate to move second in the Championship.

Shocking decision on Georginio Rutter for Leeds

It was a pretty shocking decision from the referee as there is no doubt that Rutter was taken down as he looked to go through on goal.

It’s yet another incident where the officiating just isn’t good enough as there continues to be a lot of frustration around the standard of referees across England.

There is no reason why the forward would go down if he wasn’t clearly impeded as he would’ve been in a position to get a shot away at goal.

It was bright play from Bamford in the build-up to set his strike partner through on goal after the pair have shown some excellent moments between them in recent weeks.

The Whites’ forward options are looking great at the moment, with that duo being backed up by Joel Piroe and the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto also providing a goal threat.
