Phil Hay: Adam Forshaw and Joel Robles could be offered Leeds United deal despite Elland Road Monday development

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has revealed that Adam Forshaw and Joel Robles could still be offered deals despite being released by Leeds United on Monday.

The board released their retained list (12 June), with Stuart McKinstry and Will Brook following the first team pair out of Elland Road.

However, Hay has revealed (via Twitter, 12 June) that the pair could return for pre-season after they were released from their “current” contracts.

“Leeds United retained list – Adam Forshaw and Joel Robles both released from current contracts,” wrote Hay.

“But also invited back for pre-season training and not out of the question that they’ll be made future offers to stay.”

Interesting

This is certainly an interesting development. It’s clear the duo’s current deals were not complicit for a Championship wage structure.

Potentially allowing them to look elsewhere and then come back on reduced terms could well be a sensible option for Leeds moving forward.

Forshaw in particular would be a move to pursue. The Englishman knows what is needed to gain promotion from the second tier. Even having him around the squad as a bit-part player could well have been an option for the board.

Leeds United

However, with a new manager likely to be hired within a matter of weeks, a blank canvas could well be required. Shifting some big wages off the bill could allow the new man to make a number of signings, which could benefit Leeds in the long run.

As for Roca, he will go down as yet another disappointing addition who was signed under the stewardship of Victor Orta, Andrea Radrizzani and Jesse Marsch.

In other Leeds United news, doubts have emerged within the 49ers investment group over whether the Whites’ buy-out is the right move.
