Leeds United loanee Alfie McCalmont had a Tuesday to remember for Oldham in the Papa John’s Trophy.
The young midfielder scored twice for the Latics as he faced West Yorkshire side, Bradford, winning 3-1 with two late goals.
Many Oldham and Whites fans were equally awestruck by the Northern Ireland international, who has started to make a name for himself in Lancashire.
Harry Kewell isn’t a favoured name at Elland Road, but the Australian has been tasked with guiding McCalmont through the next stage of his career.
The former Leeds player admitted that the 20-year-old was “Superb” for Oldham on Tuesday, as he endured the near-perfect night at Valley Parade.
“Perfect for Alfie,” he said after the game.
“It was great he got two goals, I thought he was superb tonight.”
Marcelo Bielsa has always been a big fan on McCalmont and has made it clear that he has big plans for his future at Elland Road.
The 20-year-old signed a new contract with the Whites before sealing this loan switch and has been earmarked as the next Kalvin Phillips.
Bielsa admitted that over the first lockdown he spent hours watching the youngster and taking notes over his strengths despite his lack of football for the under-23s.
This move is clearly working, and McCalmont is starting to reap the rewards of taking the plunge with this loan switch.
