Pep Guardiola in curious exchange with Mateusz Klich as Manchester City beat Leeds United

Mateusz Klich shared a “curious” exchange with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola after Leeds United conceded the opener at Elland Road, according to Graham Smyth.

The Pole is believed to be headed towards the exit in West Yorkshire [The Athletic, 26 December] after struggling for game time this season under Jesse Marsch.

He made another late appearance off the bench on Wednesday night (28 December) as the Whites lost 3-1 to Erling Haaland and company, and while it was no surprise he enjoyed a few words with former teammate Kalvin Phillips on the touchline, the City boss’ determination to share something with him was less expected.

Writing in the Yorkshire Evening Post on Thursday (29 December) Smyth said: “When Mateusz Klich emerged from the Leeds dugout to warm-up in the first half, something said by Phillips – his golf buddy and former team-mate – evidently tickled the Polish international.

“What was much more curious was the chat that Guardiola had with Klich, in the wake of the visitors’ opener.

“The Manchester City boss had something he wanted to impart to the Leeds man, before they shared an embrace.”

Klich may not be long for Leeds United now with a move to DC United in the US potentially on the cards, he has been a big part of the rise back to the top for this club.

Guardiola is no stranger to picking out surprise players from opposing teams who has taken a particular interest in, with Southampton’s Nathan Redmond on the receiving end of the Catalan’s wisdom more than once.

As a versatile midfielder there is every chance that the former Barcelona captain and manager sees similarities to certain parts of Klich’s game.

But it may be that he had some comments about Phillips’ physique that he thought the England international’s friend would enjoy, as the manager rowed back on his view that the former Whites favourite had returned from the World Cup overweight.

Speaking after the victory at Elland Road Guardiola said, as per Sky Sports: “He has the perfect body now – so sexy”

So the City boss is as eccentric as ever, and Klich may have made his last outing at the home of the Whites in his 193rd appearance, if a January exit is to come about.

In other Leeds United news, Jeff Stelling has predicted a tight result in the trip to Newcastle.
