Paul Merson says agent of Daniel Farke should be 'knighted' after 'fortunate' Leeds United appointment
Paul Merson has been left baffled by Leeds United and their decision to hire Daniel Farke this summer, saying his agent should be knighted.
The Whites were relegated from the Premier League last season, a campaign that saw Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce all have spells in the dugout.
Farke was tasked with the job of engineering a route back to the Premier League, a path he has travelled twice during his time at Norwich City.
But Merson, speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday (5 August, 14:22), believes the German’s disappointing end to life at Carrow Road means he was lucky to get the Leeds job.
“His agent should have got knighted. Should have got knighted, how did he get that job? They lost 27 games on the trot at Norwich didn’t they?” Merson said.
“That’s then. You’ve gotta weigh it up, I know he got them out before but this league’s a lot harder, he was at Norwich where like they couldn’t help but get in the playoffs and they didn’t get in the playoffs, you know what I mean?
“I think he’s very fortunate, I like him don’t get me wrong but for me, they are one of the biggest clubs about Leeds.
“I’m having Daniel Farke, I like him, I really like him, he’s fortunate to get this job for what he done at the end.”
Harsh…
Paul Merson is never shy about giving his opinion and outlandish comments are a forte of the former Arsenal and Aston Villa forward, who is now a noted pundit with Sky Sports.
But on this one, it seems a pretty harsh judgement. Farke has a proven track record in the Championship, twice steering Norwich to the Premier League from the second tier.
Leeds need some stability after all the turmoil of last season and then the uncertainty over the ownership through the summer, which finally finished with the 49ers Enterprises confirming their full buyout of Andrea Radrizzani.
There is still plenty of work to do this window of course, and Farke will be well aware of that fact. But given time and patience, Leeds fans should feel relatively confident that Farke will have the club competing at the top end of the table.
Merson may find he comes to regret making these comments come May.
In other Leeds United news, Burnley want to Crysencio Summerville this summer.
