Paul Merson predicts Leeds to make unwanted Premier League history for all the wrong reasons

Paul Merson believes that Leeds United will struggle in their game against Brentford on Sunday.

Leeds travel to the Gtech Community Stadium to take on Brentford in their next Premier League battle, which could prove a pivotal match come the end of the season.

Daniel Farke has alleviated pressure from his shoulders recently after results against Chelsea and Liverpool at Elland Road, and will look to harness the Whites’ momentum against the Bees.

Leeds know they still face the prospect of relegation, which makes a result even more important, as Brentford want to keep their own Premier League status.

Ahead of the showdown, Merson‘s prediction means that Leeds could now break top-flight history, but not for the right reasons.

Leeds risk becoming first Premier League side to lose nine straight Sunday matches

Elland Road has been a big reason why Leeds are still in with a shot of staying up this season.

However, it’s been away form which has haunted the Whites, and a win on the road to Brentford would only be the second away win of the campaign for Leeds.

Not only that, but Leeds’ record when playing on Sundays doesn’t make for good reading.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash, Merson believes that the Bees will be too much for Leeds.

Merson said, as quoted by Sportskeeda: “Both teams will match up against each other the same way, but I just feel Brentford have the edge.

“At home, Keith Andrews’ men are a different team. Even though Leeds have done extremely well to get four points against Chelsea and Liverpool in their last two games, I expect them to come up short here.”

Merson has predicted that Brentford will beat Leeds 3-1, which would see Farke’s side go down in history for becoming the first Premier League side to lose nine times in a row on a Sunday.

Merson could be right about Leeds, the data proves why

On paper, Leeds could even be touted as favourites to beat Brentford, considering the momentum that the Whites will be bringing into the match.

However, the underlying data suggests that Brentford have a major advantage over Leeds due to the home side’s record on their own patch.

Brentford sit fourth for home form in the Premier League, behind Manchester City, Arsenal, and Aston Villa.

Then, when bringing Leeds’ away record into the equation, it’s a recipe for disaster for the Whites.

Regardless, Farke and Leeds will be full of confidence heading into the fixture and will surely ignore the odds that are stacked against them.
