Paul Merson jokes after what heard from Leeds United win v Sunderland

Paul Merson couldn’t resist cracking a joke after what he was told about Leeds United’s win against Sunderland last Monday.

Leeds United secured an emphatic three points against the Black Cats last time out as their quest for automatic promotion goes on.

Pascal Struijk was the matchwinner for the Whites, heading home from two Joe Rothwell crosses after the duo were brought on for the latter stages of the game.

However, while Leeds fans will have been pleased with the result, another man was in attendance with Merson keen to make a joke at his expense.

Michael Dawson faces brunt of Paul Merson joke after Leeds v Sunderland

One of those in attendance at Elland Road was Michael Dawson, who talked about the “lovely hospitality” he received from Leeds as they continued their march for promotion.

Though Merson wasn’t going to let Dawson dwell on his experience too much, cracking an instant joke in response to what Dawson said.

Speaking on Sky Sports News (22 February, 12:30pm), Merson said: “We knew he wouldn’t be in the cheap seats,” causing the entire studio to erupt into laughter.

It’s fair to say that Dawson will have been entertained by the clash with Sunderland, after what was an excellent showcase of top-level Championship football.

Leeds have one foot in the Premier League

Promotion is certainly still in the hands of Leeds, but as always with the Championship, there will be many more twists and turns in the remainder of the season.

However, based on their current form, a Premier League return appears all but nailed on for the Whites who look likely to be rewarded for what has been an excellent campaign.

An away encounter with Sheffield United will paint a clearer picture of the title race, but a win would all but seal their promotion.

The clash at Bramall Lane is just as important as the previous one at Elland Road, and if Leeds are to come away with all three points, they need to replicate the performance from the game against the Black Cats, although they may have to do it without Manor Solomon.
