Paul Merson blown away by ‘unbelievable’ £120m Leeds United news

Paul Merson cannot believe how well Leeds United are doing in the Championship after learning the club recouped £120m in player sales last summer.

The Whites have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in fortunes under Daniel Farke after an underwhelming start to the campaign having lost Archie Gray, Crysensio Summerville, and Georginio Rutter to Premier League sides.

Jules Warren revealed live on Sky Sports [22 October, 7:37pm], Leeds brought in £120m from those three sales alone leaving Merson in disbelief.

Merson said: “It’s unbelievable really because usually when you come down [to the Championship] you sell all your best players, don’t you? But they haven’t had to settle the books, yeah [they have] been amazing so far this season.

“They’ve got rid of them players and the players they bring in, they know that they can play in that league – it’s hard playing at Leeds, it’s a hard place to play, it’s a Championship team but it’s really a Premier League club in my opinion with the fan base.”

Leeds United are flying high in the Championship

While Leeds were always expected to be serious contenders for the Championship title this season, the loss of three of their star players raised concerns at Elland Road.

However, Farke recruited well throughout the summer to replace his stars for a fraction of the cost earned through the sales and his side looks more determined than ever to secure a Premier League return this year.

The Whites have gotten the better end of the deal – Rutter has become a regular at Brighton but Summerville on the other hand, is struggling for minutes at West Ham United, and, Tottenham are looking to sanction a loan move for Archie Gray [Mucho Deporte] with his development deemed best served away from North London.

Farke has worked wonders in the face of adversity this season with Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Gruev, and Max Wober all sustaining long-term injuries, the results have not wavered much in their absence.

Leeds will, of course, move to rectify the situation in central midfield in the free-agent market but there is no denying the sensational turnaround at Elland Road and long may it continue.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites could be hit by financial ‘disaster’ as a ‘big hit’ is speculated by an ex-star.
