Patrick Viera was intrigued by Leeds United manager job after Premier League breaking news
Former Crystal Palace manager Patrick Viera was “intrigued” with the vacant Leeds United managerial position when Jesse Marsch was sacked by the club in February, according to The Athletic.
The former Arsenal legend was sacked by Crystal Palace on Friday morning (17 March), with the club winless in 11 Premier League outings.
However, with Viera’s contract at Selhurst Park due to expire anyway at the end of 2024, the manager was “intrigued” when Marsch was sacked at Elland Road and Victor Orta’s appointment process began.
The Athletic wrote: “He was intrigued by the possibility of succeeding Jesse Marsch at Leeds United when the American was sacked in early February, although that never progressed into anything formal.
“Palace would not have stood in Vieira’s way — the fact that no formal talks had taken place over a new contract despite his deal running out at the end of next season was an indication of that — but ultimately his inability to engineer a post-World Cup revival led to his undoing.”

Although Javi Gracia is currently in the Elland Road dugout, he is only in a temporary status at the moment, with his future beyond the end of the season questionable.
Although his Palace side have gone through a massive slump in recent weeks, Viera was widely praised for the job he had overseen at the London club, getting the best out of the likes of Wilfried Zaha and playing an exciting, attacking brand of football.
This would likely have suited the Red Bull-centric that has underpinned Leeds in recent times and would have been an extremely interesting option if the club had entered formal negotiations.
Viera’s stock has taken a plummet with his sacking on Friday, but he would still remain a viable option to take the reins at Elland Road in the summer.
Gracia remains the frontrunner for the job permanently if he can mastermind an escape from relegation, but this update is an interesting option to consider.
