Pascal Struijk makes Leeds United captaincy admission after Liam Cooper update

Pascal Struijk has admitted that he would be “proud” to become the captain of Leeds United this season.

This comes after the exit of former captain Liam Cooper has been all but confirmed after he has been linked with a move to fellow Championship side Blackburn Rovers [Alan Nixon, 11 July] among others.

Speaking to LeedsLive on 22 July, Struijk stated that the conversation around the captaincy hasn’t been made just yet.

“We haven’t had the conversation yet, but if it’s me I’ll be really proud to wear the armband,” he said.

“I’ve been there for a long time already. I’ve been enjoying my time. If that were something to happen then I would be really proud and grateful for something like that.”

Pascal Struijk would be a solid choice of captain for Leeds United

After making the move to Elland Road in 2018, the Dutchman is now one of Leeds’ longest-serving players.

He has played a regular first-team role since his arrival and has developed into one of the club’s strongest defenders.

His season was cut short last term after suffering an injury around Christmas that ruled him out for the second half of the term.

He has since returned from injury and will be staking his claim for a starting spot next to Joe Rodon once again.

The pair formed a solid partnership at the start of the 2023/24 season and Struijk’s absence can be attributed as one of the reasons behind Leeds’ failure to gain promotion.

Pascal Struijk is an important player for Leeds United

Over the last month the defender had been linked with a move to Torino [Gianluca Di Marzio, 5 July] but thanks to his latest comments, it seems as if his future still lies within West Yorkshire, for now at least.

This will be music to fans’ ears as they look to battle for Premier League status once again.
