'Outstanding' - Warnock wowed by one 'Brilliant' Leeds player after narrow win v Burnley

Stephen Warnock was blown away by Kalvin Phillips’ performance in the Leeds United defence on Sunday as they beat Burnley 1-0 at Elland Road.

Patrick Bamford’s early penalty kick was enough to secure all three points for the Whites, who had to battle hard in defence to keep Sean Dyche’s attack at bay.

Phillips, 25, dropped into a back-three alongside Luke Ayling and Pascal Struijk for most of the match and it would be fair to say that he impressed.

Leeds supporters were wowed by his display on Twitter while ex-Elland Road left-back Warnock was also left waxing lyrical about the England international.

“The impressive thing about Phillips, his reading of the game, his ability to step out. But this is what I really liked, his ability to sense danger,” Warnock said on BBC One’s Match of the Day 2 on Sunday night.

“He’s having a little look here. Where’s Chris Wood? Where’s the danger?

“Often, when you’re playing central midfield, you can get caught ball-watching when you move into that central defensive position but his ability to see the danger was quite brilliant.

“Again, back-post, not afraid to be caught in a one-v-one situation with Chris Wood. Just seeing him again. Great defensive header.

“And then this out, understanding that he’s pulling off on his shoulder. Has the ability to see it. Again, sensing that danger and being able to win the header.

“He was outstanding.”

Phillips masterclass

Marcelo Bielsa has faced a lot of criticism for how many goals and chances Leeds have conceded this season and after the 6-2 defeat to Manchester United, questions were asked about whether he’d tweak his system.

Leeds were a lot more defensive against Burnley and really had to grind out that clean sheet that helped the get three points on Sunday.

Phillips’ masterclass in the defence played a huge role in that.

According to stats by Wyscout, Phillips made a huge 14 interceptions and 11 recoveries against Burnley while also completing four clearances and winning three of his five defensive duels.

It really isn’t a surprise to us that he played so well in the defence but for those who had not seen Leeds in the Championship, it did come as a shock to see Bielsa pull a solid defensive display out of the hat.

Leeds needed that clean sheet and more importantly, they needed the three points.
