‘Outstanding’, ‘Awesome’ – Many Leeds fans react to Weds announcement: ‘What a player’

Leeds United defender Luke Ayling has enjoyed a phenomenal Christmas period this season.

The right-back starred time after time for Marcelo Bielsa, none more so than in the 5-4 victory against Birmingham, where he scored the third before setting up the final two goals in the memorable afternoon in the Midlands.

His form has continued into January, where he was solid captaining the Whites during the FA Cup defeat against Arsenal on Monday.

That performance was shadowed by the defender limping off holding his hamstring – something which hasn’t been disclosed yet.

In much more positive news though, Ayling was awarded the PFA Championship Player of the Month award on Wednesday. The 28-year-old received 39% of the votes and beat a number of different players in the league to the award.

According to WhoScored, the defender has been Leeds’ second-best performer all season – with only Kalvin Phillips above him in the squad.

Ayling managed two clean sheets and made 18 tackles in a month where Leeds managed to reclaim their spot at the top of the division and maintain a nine-point gap to the playoffs.

Many Leeds fans reacted to the news, with the majority blown away with Ayling’s performances over the past month.

When a Leeds player is involved in the running for an award voted for by fans, they usually end up winning – as seen a number of times this season.

Ayling was a benefactor of that once already, with his goal against Birmingham winning Sky Sports’ Goal of the Day despite Middlesbrough’s Ashley Fletcher scoring from nearly 40-yards on the same matchday.
