Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla was hit with an eight-match ban on Friday after a charge of racial abuse was found to be proven.
Casilla, 33, was accused of using racist language towards West Brom attacker Jonathan Leko while he was on loan at Charlton earlier this season.
It has been six months since the incident but the FA have finally dished out their punishment for Casilla, who will not be available to play for Leeds until mid-April and has also been handed a £60,000 fine.
In response to the punishment, Leeds released a statement on their official website and one paragraph has let to a lot of rivals EFL fans talking on Twitter.
Leeds said: “The FA panel have based their decision on the balance of probability rather than proving Kiko to be guilty beyond reasonable doubt, which we have always believed is the more appropriate burden of proof.”
While it is also made clear that the Whites do not tolerate any kind of discrimination, it seems that they are still standing by their goalkeeper rather than accepting what the FA has decided upon.
Fans from clubs across the Championship, including West Brom, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City, are not at all happy with Leeds’ statement.
One West Brom supporter wants to see Casilla sacked by Leeds in the same way the Baggies terminated Nicolas Anelka’s contract in 2014 while the Whites have also been accused of being “in denial”.
Until the full details of the incident are released by the FA next week, it is difficult to judge whether Leeds’ response is acceptable or not and whether these rival fans are right or wrong.
Here is a selection of their tweets:
A proper club would sack him like we did Anelka.

The Leeds statement is outrageous. If you or I were found guilty of using racist language at work we would quite rightly be sacked. Why should footballers be different? It is always ‘balance of probability’ in Employment Law. Still, the 60k fine will bankrupt him! https://t.co/OrYjV3e8CQ

The statement by @LUFC is absolutely amazing. Talk about being in denial. And him to continually deny it…when has anyone ever admitted to it????
Shocking by Leeds. https://t.co/EOD1kvaPf9

In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay has detailed whether the Whites can sign a new goalkeeper on an emergency loan deal.
