Out-of-favour Leeds United ace Max Wober wows Austrian media on international duty
Leeds United ace Max Wober was once again solid for Austria during their 1-1 draw against Slovenia in the 2024 Nations League.
Wober was deployed as a centre-back and helped hold down the fort to ensure that his team stayed in the game and in the running to gain some points in the Nations League group stage.
Austria’s national media reacted to his performance with Kurier stating that the 26-year-old was “fast and reliable” throughout the clash.
“You didn’t notice the lack of match practice at Leeds United, where he hasn’t played a single minute this season. He won some duels in the air, until the end action fast and reliable in the rest of the defence” Kurier (Page 19, 7 September) gave the defender a 2 (good) out of five, just one rank off their top mark.
Kronen Zeitung (Page 80, 7 September) rated Wober a 4/6 (which is one of the highest rankings for the whole team) and wrote: “Remained the winner, especially in many aerial duels. You didn’t notice any (lack of) match practice in him.”
Max Wober should be given a chance at Leeds United this season
Wober finds himself in quite a difficult situation in terms of his playing time at Leeds.
The defender is undoubtedly one of the most talented centre-backs in the division but the Whites have both Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk among their ranks who are Daniel Farke’s preferred options.
The Whites have made additions to their back line over the summer window with Jayden Bogle among those to have arrived at Elland Road.
Despite Struijk and Rodon performing well this term, it feels like Wober can still earn a chance to redeem himself among the Whites’ fanbase.

The defender spent last season in the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach who wanted to make his transfer a permanent one but the two clubs couldn’t agree on terms [Rheinische Post, 29 July].
There’s still plenty of time for things to change and the fact that Wober has recently doubled down on his commitment to the West Yorkshire outfit [Sky Sports Austria, 4 September], it feels as if the least Farke could do is give him a chance to play.
In other Leeds news, Willy Gnonto has seemingly suffered a very painful injury.
