‘Only way I see it happening’ – Gary Neville claims only one way Leeds season can finish
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville thinks that the only way the 19/20 season will get completed is behind closed doors, which would mean Leeds United fans missing out on the likely promotion party.
The Premier League and Championship remain suspended – indefinitely now after the latest update on Friday.
Football will only re-start when it’s safe to do so in the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak and Neville has said he doesn’t care when that is.
“Time frames don’t concern me,” Neville said on Sky Sports News on Saturday (11am).
“The most important thing is that we do this when it’s safe and that fans and players aren’t put at risk.
“If we get to that point it means the country is recovering and then we’re going to see behind closed doors football. It’s the only way I see it happening because social distancing will still be in place.”
All the signs are that Neville is right.
There are still plenty of Leeds fans who want the season to resume when fans can come back, but that could be a long time – potentially 2021.
Sport could likely resume way before then behind closed doors and in all likelihood that’s what’s going to happen.
There are only nine games left in this season and while it’s not ideal to play behind closed doors, it’s much, much better than the season getting voided.
It would be a very weird end to the centenary season for Leeds and a promotion that will no doubt come up as a trivia question in the future, but we can’t see any other way it happens either.
