Erick Pulgar is being continuously linked with Leeds United in the January window.
The latest is a report from Calciomercato that claims Leeds are “ready” to bid £22.3m for the Fiorentina midfielder.
That follows on from a La Nazione report on Monday that said Leeds were ready to take the player on a six-month loan without an obligation.
Athletic journalist Phil Hay has talked about the Pulgar interest.
Writing in a fan Q&A he said, “Pulgar is an odd one. Someone in Florence seems very keen to push the line that he’s coming to Leeds.
“There were stories in the local Italian press in the summer that Leeds had agreed a fee for him – something Leeds denied (and clearly the move never happened).
“There were reports again earlier this month that he was saying his goodbyes, even though Leeds don’t seem to have moved to make it happen.
“They know who he is and there’s no doubt that he has talent but certainly in the summer it felt as if the rumour was stronger than the actual interest.”
Story is growing
There are some intriguing bits to take from Hay’s comments.
First, that Leeds know who he is and that Pulgar himself is a talented player.
Second, that Hay seems to think that the stories are all coming from the Fiorentina end.
That could mean the player trying to engineer a move through his agent or his club trying to drum up interest for a player who seems surplus to requirements.
The other intriguing thing about the story is that Pulgar plays in a position that has just been exposed for Leeds, who could certainly have done with the Chilean against Brighton.
While Leeds have promised a quiet month, Bielsa has consistently said that if they could sign a player who would improve his squad, he’d be open to it.
As quoted by TeamTalk, he said on January signings: “I can’t give you a firm answer, I can’t say yes or no. If there’s a player that clearly improves the squad then obviously that would be good for the club.
“The option to bring a great player to the club sometimes depends on the needs of the team, but sometimes opportunities arise. In this sense, Victor Orta (director of football) has a way of working which usually benefits the team.”
We think Leeds have a need and there certainly seems to be a deal open to sign Pulgar, either on loan or as a permanent signing.
A loan with an option to buy would be the best for Leeds and we hope that it can happen.
