‘Not the answer’ – Graham Smyth says prolific forward not the one for Leeds despite reported bid

Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth has said that Jarrod Bowen is “not the answer” for Leeds United as they look to bring in a new striker before the January window shuts.

The Sun claimed that Leeds were readying a bid for the prolific winger who’s scored 16 goals in the Championship this season.

Ollie Watkins and Aleksandar Mitrovic are the top two scorers in the league with 18. Patrick Bamford, Leeds’ leading scorer, has 10.

However, Bowen is not a number nine and Leeds desperately need back-up for Bamford.

Talking on the latest episode of the Inside Elland Road podcast, Smyth said, “At the very least he’s going to be a player they’ve looked at.

“He’s not a like-for-like replacement for Bamford but he’s a goal scorer and he’d get fans excited.

“McCann was asked about it and he said ‘No, I don’t believe so, nothing’s come to me. As is well publicized there was an improved offer put to Jarrod and his representatives so we’re just waiting to hear back.’

“He does admit something might need to happen if Bowen doesn’t sign a new contract. That’s one that’s interesting but caveated by McCann saying he hasn’t seen any offers.

“I just have the feeling he’s not the answer.”

Meanwhile, Leeds are finally set to find out about a potential move for Che Adams over the weekend.

Southampton rejected a third offer from Leeds this week but the Telegraph has reported that their chairman Gao Jisheng will make a final decision in the next 72 hours.

That could finally unlock the protracted saga one way or another.
