Phil Hay believes that Leeds United will be looking for two midfielders this summer, one in the holding midfield role and one further forward who can double up for Mateusz Klich.
The one position Leeds have no cover for at the moment is the holding midfield role made his own by Kalvin Phillips.
Hay has said that “noises from Leeds” have said they’re looking for someone who can step in when Phillips is out, not someone who would threaten him for his place.
Hay thinks that will be a younger player but someone who is skilled enough to step up in the Premier League immediately, and he sad that Victor Orta has already begun work on potential options.
Talking on the latest episode of the Phil Hay Show podcast the Athletic journalist said, “The noises we hear from Leeds are that they’re going to look for a player like that [Kalvin Phillips] in the summer, not someone necessarily to challenge Phillips, or to threaten his place, but someone who can step in and is ready to step in and is skilled.
“Don’t get me wrong,” Hay added, “whoever comes in is going to have to go through the normal education with Bielsa, that happens to everyone, but there’s definitely a way for Bielsa and Leeds to make their lives a bit easier, and a way in which you don’t have to go to Arsenal and hand the initiative by changing what was a very structured back four against Palace. It seems that evaporated for Leeds against Arsenal.”
Asked if Leeds would sign two midfielders Hay said, “I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if it wasn’t two.
“They will certainly go looking for someone who can provide cover for Phillips and I think that will be a younger option.
“I think there will be attention paid to higher up the pitch, the more forward midfield positions.
“I know injuries are biting, there’s no Rodrigo, I don’t think he would have played Klich on Sunday when he clearly wasn’t ready… They are going to have to address those positions, someone who can double up for Klich, that middle ground in between the eight and the ten. Get that right and you’d strengthen the squad significantly.
“Two midfielders would make sense. One in the Phillips area and one in the Klich area. They feel like the two positions that are under-resourced.”
In Bielsa we trust
Phillips has been ruled out again for the game against Wolves and that’s got some fans raging.
One even said that we wouldn’t get anything out of the game on Friday, nor the Southampton game if Phillips was out then too.
He said that would get alarm bells ringing.
Two points. Leeds are far from a one-man team and we beat Aston Villa at a canter without Phillips.
Secondly, what alarm bells? Leeds might not be mathematically safe but we’re probably two wins away from guaranteeing our Premier League status.
We could do that without Phillips, not that we’d want to.
Fans get a bit carried away with things like this. The aim this season was to stay in the Premier League. That’s pretty much achieved already.
It’s given Bielsa a full season to work out what he needs and where. You can expect him to solve all of these issues in the summer, armed with the information he needs to make educated choices rather than big-money gambles.
