Nixon: Leeds bid for attacker rejected, Whites will need to make improved offer
Alan Nixon revived the long-standing Leeds United interest in Rangers attacker Ryan Kent on Wednesday but has now said the Scottish side have rejected the £10m offer.
Nixon said in the report in the Sun that while Kent was settled in Glasgow, it would all come down to whether Rangers accepted the offer.
He’s now said they haven’t and that if Leeds want to sign Kent they will need to offer more money for him.
In updates on his personal Twitter page on Thursday, Nixon confirmed the bid from Leeds was in “but it’s not been accepted”.
After one Leeds fan asked hopefully, “Yet?”, Nixon replied saying, “Needs to be improved”.
£10m and no more
We’d be very happy to see Kent at Elland Road and we think he would be an excellent squad player – and maybe more if he pushes on in the Premier League.
At £10m we think he would deliver good value for money.
However, there are more exciting targets to land this summer and, for us, Kent hasn’t done enough at Rangers to justify a massive hike in the money the Scottish side paid for him (£6.5m).
It’s interesting that Nixon says that the bid hasn’t been accepted and that more money is needed.
That’s very different to saying that the player isn’t for sale – the stance Brighton have taken with Ben White.
Rangers are a club where players will always be for sale at the right price but we think £10m is about right for Kent.
However, the complication here is a 20% sell-on clause that Liverpool have in the player. They obviously think that Kent will go on to be sold for decent money in the future.
However, at the moment, with a limited budget, a market depressed by the Coronavirus outbreak, a club not actively looking to sell and other irons in the fire, this seems like a real long shot.
