Nigel Martyn explains what Leeds United have to offer Jack Harrison to fend off Newcastle United interest

Nigel Martyn believes Leeds United can keep hold of Jack Harrison by ensuring three targets are met.

Harrison was subject to two bids from Newcastle United over the summer [The Athletic], as the Tyneside club look to invest their newly-found cash.

Leeds United ended up holding on to Harrison, and are now in talks over a new contract with the 25-year-old.

With talks still ongoing, Martyn believes that the Whites can get Harrison to sign but will have to keep the winger happy.

“He’s a goal threat as well as creating lots of chances. He’s started this season really, really well, with lots of assists and again comes up with important goals too,” Martyn told The Express.

“He’ll be wanting to and trying to make a late run at the England squad if he can.

“In terms of keeping him, that will depend on how happy he is. If he’s happy, Leeds’ results are good and he’s starting nearly every game then I think he’ll be happy to stay.

“Obviously Newcastle, financially, have got a lot of money so they can turn his head financially. But hopefully he loves playing for Leeds enough that he doesn’t need to make the move.”

Happy, appreciated and winning

What Martyn says may come across as very simple, but it’s true.

Harrison is playing regularly for Leeds, is hugely appreciated by Jesse Marsch and is helping the Whites achieve some outstanding results.

Should that remain throughout the season, there’s no reason Harrison should want to leave the club. He’s in great form and is approaching his peak at 25 years old.

He’s spent four years at the club including his loan spells and perfectly suits the style of play at Elland Road. He’s become a fan favourite during his time in Yorkshire and you’d be stretched to find a fan happy to see him leave.

That being said, money often talks and Leeds aren’t in a position to wrestle financially with Newcastle should they come with another bid in January or next summer.

Therefore, it’s important for Marsch to emphasise to Harrison just how much he means to Leeds, and hopefully it results in a contract extension sooner rather than later.
