Newcastle United transfer decision surely to impact Jack Harrison pursuit

Newcastle United have been long-time admirers of Jack Harrison but their latest transfer admission could have dropped a clue on his Leeds United future.

CBS journalist Ben Jacobs (Give Me Sport, 1 October) suggested that there could still be some life left in the Magpies move for the 25-year-old after the World Cup. The Telegraph reported (22 August) that Leeds were in talks with Newcastle over a potential sale, but the Whites’ £40million demands put the North East side off.

However, now Leeds fans will be able to sleep a little easier at night after it was revealed Newcastle have seemingly turned their attention elsewhere. Brighton forward Leandro Trossard has emerged as a transfer target for the Toon (Nothern Echo, 31 October), with the Seagulls’ attacker vauled at around £30million.

Trossard’s contract is up in the summer of 2024, and Newcastle clearly believe there is a better value deal to be done, compared to looking to reignite a January move for Harrison. For now, it appears Harrison won’t be going anywhere and it’s crucial he gets back to top form.

One goal and three assists has culminated in a disappointing start to the campaign for the winger. The summer of speculation may not have helped, but he does need to be providing more on the pitch for Leeds in the coming weeks.

If Newcastle do make a move for Trossard it could well put his mind to rest and get the wide man focussed on the task at hand for Jesse Marsch’s side. Leeds could even look to open contrat talks with the attacker, with his current deal coming to a close in the summer of 2024.
