Newcastle have larger transfer budget than thought as expensive Crysencio Summerville deal targeted at Leeds United

Newcastle could be set to revisit their interest in Leeds United star Crysencio Summerville in the January window, according to Football Transfers.

The outlet reported via their website on 3 January that while the Magpies have briefed “concerns over their hamstrung budget” due to FFP concerns they actually have “a lot more than they have made out so far” to spend.

This is reportedly due to the mega-rich Saudi-backed club hoping to keep asking prices down to avoid being priced out of deals, so while a move for Dutchman Summerville is seen as “hard to do” it may not be impossible.

The Whites would “certainly demand a significant sum” for the 22-year-old, who has 12 goals and six assists in that Championship so far this term, but Newcastle may actually have the spending room to accommodate it.

It is also noted that the Leeds United attacker has the same agent as St. James’ Park boss Eddie Howe, Wasserman in the US, who helped broker deals for Lewis Hall from Chelsea and Harvey Barnes from Leicester in the summer.

Threat

With the third season of the Howe era at Newcastle proving far more of an ordeal than the second Summerville might be the kind of player who they are prepared to spend big on in an attempt to kickstart their campaign.

Whether they would be prepared to come up with the sort of fee to force the powers that be at Elland Road to take it seriously, bigger budget or not, is another matter.

It would surely require something huge for Leeds United to sacrifice a player who has done as much as anyone this season to make promotion back to the Premier League a possibility.

The financial benefit of getting back into the top flight likely outweighs a deal for any one player, but a major offer could turn Summerville’s head.

He showed few signs of wanting to leave during a summer when plenty of his former teammates were doing just that, so it seems more likely that he remains for the rest of the campaign either way.

But when teams get increasingly desperate towards the final days of the January window it is hard to entirely rule anything out, and with Brighton also said to be interested in the Elland Road star [Alan Nixon on Patreon, 24 December] it could make for some uneasy weeks for Daniel Farke.

The financial might of Newcastle is clearly going to be a concern to most clubs if they can in fact spend more than they’ve been letting on, but having emerged as a central star this season it is going to take something special to prize Summerville away midseason.

In other Leeds United news, “extensive negotiations” are under way to sign a Whites player on a permanent deal.
