New Joel Piroe footage shows Calvert-Lewin might have just made mistake by signing for Leeds

Joel Piroe’s starting position at Leeds United has been placed under threat this summer.

Ahead of Leeds‘ clash with Everton on Monday night, it is evident that Daniel Farke and 49ers Enterprises view their options up top as one of the weaker areas within the squad.

Although the Dutchman won the Golden Boot as Leeds claimed the Championship title with 100 points, this is seemingly not enough to guarantee Piroe a starting role in the Premier League.

However, despite Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s recent arrival in West Yorkshire as well as the continued links with other strikers, new footage of Piroe may have just made Calvert-Lewin think twice about his move to Elland Road.

New Piroe footage emerges on the eve of Leeds’ Premier League return

Piroe’s goalscoring did not slow down in pre-season amid the uncertainty regarding whether Farke has faith in him to lead the line for a full campaign in the top-flight.

Even with Lukas Nmecha and Calvert-Lewin joining over the summer, the Piroe is expected to get the nod and start against Everton.

With the recent training footage posted by Leeds on their X account on 17 August, it’s easy to see why, as the former Swansea man can be seen finishing a chance well at the back post, before following it up with a lovely driven finish into the bottom corner.

Despite the holes in Piroe’s game being his athleticism and general hold-up play, his finishing ability makes him an extremely useful asset for Farke to have at his disposal.

Piroe must be at his best next season

The competition for places in the Leeds squad is a necessity as they step up to the top flight, but if Piroe can start the season well and not give Calvert-Lewin a sniff when it comes to starting, the former Evertonian may regret not signing for Fenerbache.

However, this works both ways, as although the competition may spur Piroe on, it could equally have the opposite effect, where the 26-year-old begins to snatch at chances as he feels the pressure of losing his starting position.

Farke will be hoping it has the former effect as opposed to the latter, with a fit and firing Piroe a vital player in Leeds’ survival bid.
