New Hannibal Mejbri footage emerges as FA and Lancashire Police probe Leeds United ‘spitting’ complaints
Hannibal Mejbri remains at the centre of an FA and Lancashire Police investigation amid complaints made by Leeds United fans at the weekend.
Leeds were beaten 2-0 by Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday to make it back-to-back Premier League defeats.
Mejbri is no stranger to being involved in Leeds controversy, having supposedly had missiles thrown at him in a game with the Whites last year.
Now, former Manchester United player Mejbri is accused of spitting at Leeds fans and the matter is being looked into by the authorities.
And fresh footage of the alleged incident has now been relayed by Graham Smyth.
FA and Lancashire Police looking into Hannibal Mejbri spitting allegations
As Keith Hackett exclusively told MOT Leeds News, Burnley midfielder Mejbri faces being banned if found guilty of the alleged offence.
On top of the aforementioned two incidents, Mejbri was also seen winding up Leeds fans at Elland Road in the past.
However, neither of those two incidents are as serious – and indeed disgusting if true – as this one from the weekend.
Lancashire police say they are “establishing the facts” surrounding the incident, with a Leeds fan in the away section lodging a complaint.
It had previously been suggested Mejbri did not go close enough to the Leeds fans at any point to spit in their direction, but new footage potentially changes that.
Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Smyth relayed footage posted on X on Tuesday and added the comment: “Some footage of the incident being looked at by Lancashire Police and the FA.”
In the clip, Mejbri can be seen close to the Leeds fans, with numerous spectators in the away end reacting to something the midfielder said or did.
It must be stressed that this remains an allegation at this point, with the FA and Lancashire Police still looking into the matter.
Jonny Evans among previous examples of players being banned for spitting
This incident is not the first of its kind.
West Brom’s Goran Popov was sent off for spitting at Kyle Walker in Albion’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in 2013, with the North Macedonian being sent off and given a three-match ban.
Three years earlier, Jonny Evans was seen spitting in the direction of Papiss Cisse as Man United took on Newcastle, with the latter spitting back.
Evans got a six-match ban and Cisse was given a seven-match suspension due to a previous misconduct offence.
In another incident involving a Manchester side, Hull City’s George Boyd was seen spitting towards Man City’s Joe Hart in 2014 and was given a three-game ban.
