Nemanja Matic ruled out of Leeds v Manchester United
Leeds have been given another boost ahead of their game with Manchester United with news that Nemanja Matic won’t be fit enough to feature against them.
The Whites host their long-time rivals in front of a sold-out Elland Road crowd for the first time since 2003 on Sunday, as they battle relegation from the Premier League.
Ralf Rangnick revealed during his press conference that Edinson Cavani and Tom Heaton would be unavailable due to groin injuries, but he has updated the availability, via Leeds Live, of midfielder Matic by admitting he won’t be back in time.
“Matic is back in training for the first time in a while, might not be available for Leeds but he’s back,” Rangnick said.
The Serbian has been suffering with a shin injury and while he’s back in training, he won’t be able to feature in the game which leaves them short on options in midfield.
Leeds love going man-for-man all over the pitch, so the exclusion of yet another player due to fitness concerns is only a boost for them.
They will almost certainly be able to name the Man United lineup in advance and it narrows down the options and ways in which they can play.
Leeds can expect the energy of Scott McTominay and/or Fred to start with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes providing the creativity.
But they will know there is a lack of defensive discipline in that side that Matic can provide, which means they will have a great opportunity to attack them and get some joy.
Leeds need a win as they currently sit in 15th place in the league, six points above the relegation zone with a tough run of fixtures ahead of them.
