Neil Warnock names Paul Tierney Man of the Match in Leeds clash v Manchester United

Neil Warnock has named a very unusual man of the match for the Premier League meeting between Leeds and Manchester United.

The much-anticipated fixture ended in a 4-2 defeat for the Whites but there were some positives to take from their second-half comeback.

Warnock has insisted that referee Paul Tierney was his man of the match in the game that had many controversial talking points.

Warnock told TalkSport: “Do you know who my man of the match was? You will never guess in a million years.

“I just watch Paul Tierney with the whistle on, honestly. It was just like going back in time, you know me ill criticise referees, but I thought he was instrumental.”

He added: “He refereed it with common sense, he talked to players, he knew the severity of the game.”

If there is one man you wouldn’t ever expect to give credit to a referee, never mind name them man of the match, it’s Warnock.

He has given plenty of officials their fair share of abuse over the years, but his assessment of Tierney is spot on.

Yesterday’s (February 20) Elland Road encounter felt the same as it did last time the fans witnessed the two sides go head-to-head in the stadium in 2003.

It was a proper scrap of a game, how football should be played. Every single last player on that pitch understood the severity of the game and just how much it meant to the fans as shown by their performance.

On another day there might have been decisions made that would have completely ruined the game, although Tierney could have been braver in some moments.

It was a huge shame about the result but the Whites have to use the disappointment to come back even stronger in the coming weeks.

In other Leeds United news, Martin Tyler and Gary Neville have shared a ‘huge’ transfer issue for the club.
