Neco Williams twist emerges as expensive Leeds United transfer update drops

Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams seems to be too expensive for Leeds United in the January transfer window, according to Alan Nixon.

The Sun journalist responded to a fan via his X account [18 January] with the update that may put an end to talk of the Welsh international turning up at Elland Road.

Even with Leeds’ desperation to add a new full-back, after the departures of Luke Ayling and Djed Spence, there have been doubts thrown over his addition to the Wales entourage at Elland Road.

“Neco Williams seems to be too dear,” he wrote.

Many Wales fans were happy when Williams was linked with a move away from Forest, and especially excited when Leeds were named as a potential interested party.

With Joe Rodon on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, Ethan Ampadu joining in the summer from Chelsea, and Dan James having been at the club since 2021, there is already a Welsh contingent at Elland Road for the right-back to join.

And with Daniel Farke’s need for at least one full-back, the signing of Williams makes perfect sense. However, with Leeds currently playing their football in the Championship and Forest in the Premier League, they may need to splash the cash to make the deal happen.

But after the recent news of Forest’s Profit and Sustainability breach, the club may be willing to part ways with the player for a lesser fee in an attempt to balance their books, which Leeds would benefit from.

It may depend on how confident Leeds are that they can claim promotion this season, competing in a 10-plus-way battle for the Championship playoff spots.

If they can reach the top tier, a bigger fee for Williams could be more likely. But that could be too late, with Farke’s need for a full-back apparent right now.
