Austrian media react to Leeds United ace Maximilian Wober in Austria v France
Leeds United ace Maximilian Wober featured as Austria fell to a 1-0 defeat against France in their Euro 2024 opener on Monday (17 June).
The centre-back managed just an hour on the pitch before being hooked, picking up a yellow card for a reckless challenge on Ousmane Dembele before scoring an own goal in the first half.
Wober has been away from Elland Road during the 2023/24 campaign, joining Borussia Monchengladbach last summer, while it remains unclear where his future lies now.
Reacting to his performance, Nachrichten [17 June] handed him a 4/10 rating, writing: “The central defender was often too late, and the own goal made the uncertainty even worse.”
Kleine Zeitung [17 June] were much harsher, handing the 26-year-old a 2/10 rating, writing: “He will still have to explain his behaviour at the own goal. Which defender heads the ball to the goal?
“He was not always in the picture when the fast French rolled in.”
Leeds United loanee Maximilian Wober suffers international defeat
Wober’s main aim after departing Elland Road last summer was to secure enough time to persuade Austria boss Ralf Rangnick that he was ready for Euro 2024.
It clearly worked, having been called up to the squad and starting in the back four, but his performance left a lot to be desired and will need to prove himself once again moving forward.
The defender’s future with Leeds is certainly up in the air currently, though, as per BILD, the club are demanding a fee of £12.6million this summer if he is to leave Yorkshire.

He has only made 19 appearances since joining Leeds in January 2023 so there will be no love lost between club and player if he is to move on, and it seems Daniel Farke does not envision the defender in his plans next season.
However, the same was said about Brenden Aaronson following his loan spell at Union Berlin, but the American has found his way back into the squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
Could the same happen for Wober this summer? The tournament in Germany could be a defining factor.
