Nate Silver predicts Championship top six after weekend results favour Leeds
Nate Silver has predicted that West Brom and Leeds United will finish in the top two of the Championship this season.
Silver is one of the world’s most respected prediction experts after his work in US politics.
He’s branched out into sports on his website FiveThirtyEight and they’ve published an updated prediction for the Championship after the weekend’s games using his statistical model.
They’ve got it tight at the top, with West Brom on course to pip Leeds by a single point. They’ve got West Brom finishing as champions with 85 points and Leeds in second on 84.
Brentford are the team in third place four points back, with Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Brentford making up the play-off places.
In terms of percentages, West Brom have been given a 44% chance of winning the Championship compared to 38% for Leeds.
However, Leeds have been given an 80% chance of promotion compared to just 79% for West Brom. That’s the one that matters for Leeds fans.
The weekend results have calmed the Leeds fans on Twitter.
Defeats against Wigan and Nottingham Forest, on the back of a poor run of form, had turned the #LUFC hashtag toxic, but the manner of the victory against Bristol City has proved Leeds are back on track.
Bristol City were one of the league’s form teams with four wins in the previous five ahead of the game against Leeds on Saturday.
However, they were completely played off the park at Elland Road, as you can see from SofaScore’s attack momentum graph.
The only worry will be the continued struggle in front of goal. Helder Costa and Patrick Bamford missed huge chances to make the game safe.
It means clean sheets are hugely important for Leeds and this was the first one in 12 games.
