Mark Lawrenson has backed Leeds United to return to winning ways at Elland Road against Newcastle on Wednesday evening.
The BBC pundit has predicted that the Whites will keep a clean-sheet in a 2-0 victory, bouncing back from their recent struggles.
Leeds have only won one of their last six games, and three points would be the perfect boost going into the busy Christmas period.
Writing in his BBC predictions column, Lawrenson has admitted that Newcastle may not be able to take advantage of how “naive” the Whites are in defence.
“Leeds are naive at the back and that is going to cost them at times this season,” he wrote.
“Yes, they created some good opportunities against West Ham on Friday night but the flipside of that was that the Hammers were able to play right through them.
“I don’t see this Newcastle side doing that to them though, so it might just come down to whether Marcelo Bielsa’s team can take their chances this time.”
This is getting close to must-win territory for the Whites.
With games coming up against the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham in the next month, winning home games against Newcastle and Burnley could be critical.
Newcastle aren’t in the best of places after their COVID-19 outbreak, with the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin, Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar and Andy Carroll all missing in their win over West Brom.
The majority of those players mentioned are all quality from set-piece situations, especially Carroll, so the Whites will be breathing a sigh of relief every time they conceded a corner.
Having said that, the Whites need to be better in every area and Marcelo Bielsa has been keeping his cards close to his chest with his team selection – some surprises may be on the way.
Let’s hope a negative result isn’t one of those.
