Leeds United have been ranked as the sixth-most discussed sports team in the United Kingdom by Twitter in 2020, finishing above rivals Chelsea.

@TwitterUK have been dissecting some of their statistics from the past 12 months and when it comes to sports teams, Leeds are right up there with the Premier League big boys.

The Whites ranked higher than Chelsea, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Everton. Manchester United took top spot, in front of Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham.

It speaks volumes about the Leeds United fan base that as one of this season’s promoted sides, they have been ranked inside the top 10.

While it also reflects the great success that the club enjoyed during the second half of the Championship campaign, as Marcelo Bielsa’s men secured promotion by winning the title.

Bielsa trumps Lampard again

Marcelo Bielsa’s rivalry with Frank Lampard has been one of the more eye-catching stories of his time in England after the drama that surrounded ‘Spygate’ back in 2019.

With that in mind, you can bet that many Leeds United supporters will enjoy seeing their club ranked above one of their biggest rivals, even if it is only social media.

Although the figures are based on social media discussions, it is worth recognising the disparity between the two clubs and their respective Twitter followings.

The official Chelsea Twitter account boasts a whopping 15.6million followers, while Leeds’ Twitter account only has 654.2K followers.

The figures also end the ‘big club’ argument that often comes up with rival supporters, as Leeds continue to prove their worth both on and off the pitch following their promotion back to the Premier League.
