Leeds United play Wolves tonight on Friday Night Football and all eyes will be on Marcelo Bielsa’s team news at 7pm.
The Under-23s have done their bit already today, beating Norwich 1-0 and maintaining their incredible table-topping season.
Given the two Friday games, Mark Jackson’s side was shorn of first-team stars with Elia Caprile in goal and Dani van den Heuvel on the bench.
The big reveal in the team news was that there was no place in the squad for Diego Llorente.
He was passed fit by Marcelo Bielsa but the Leeds manager also hinted at managing the star properly on his return after he was rushed back last time and injured straight away.
He had said last time that he wanted to play Llorente in the Under-23s first, and that’s the normal route back for injured Leeds players.
However, the fact that Llorente wasn’t with the Under-23s today suggests strongly that he’ll at least be on the bench tonight – especially as Charlie Cresswell, who was on the bench v Arsenal, started against Norwich this afternoon.
Llorente may well start. If he does, that will have a big impact on the line-up and would mean Luke Ayling going back to right-back. That would make Leeds fans very happy.
There were other squad clues as well. There was no Joe Gelhardt, Niall Huggins or Jack Jenkins so we’re expecting all three on the bench tonight, along with Leif Davis.
Sam Greenwood was missing, too, but he’s on the return from injury and is unlikely to be involved at Molineux tonight.
We’d love Gelhardt to get on but he’s behind Tyler Roberts and perhaps Pablo Hernandez as well in the current pecking order. He’s getting closer, though.
For Llorente, it all depends on his fitness. If Bielsa really believes he’s 100% then he could well start tonight and that would definitely free up a lot of different options at the back, with Pascal Struijk likely going into the defensive midfield position.
Fans will be very nervous, though, and will be desperate to see him come through 90 minutes after what happened last time, when he lasted just 10 minutes against Newcastle.
