Leeds plot move for towering enforcer sold for £3m in 2018 – report
All the talk in this window has been about Leeds United bringing in a new winger and a striker.
That’s why we were surprised to hear the latest name linked with the club – Connor Goldson.
The towering Rangers defender has been getting mixed reviews from the fans this season, after signing from Brighton for £3m in 2018, but he would solve a big problem Leeds have from set-pieces.
The former Brighton centre-back stands 6ft 3in tall and is a commanding presence in the box for Rangers.
We’ve seen him play a number of times and Goldson has been solid against decent European opposition like Porto.
However, he’s not anywhere near as composed on the ball as Ben White and his distribution isn’t at the same level.
Football insider have claimed that Leeds are looking for either a move in January or the summer – the latter would make a lot of sense.
With White, Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi as cover, Leeds don’t really need a centre-back this season and there’s been no talk that Marcelo Bielsa is interested in bringing one in.
However, that could change in the summer if Leeds get promoted and lose White, who is on a season-long loan.
Leeds don’t have an option to buy the Brighton player and there has been interest in him from a number of big-name Premier League clubs.
It won’t be easy, though. Goldson is an ever-present for Rangers and Steven Gerrard is said to be a huge fan.
Leeds and the Premier League, though? We can’t see many Rangers players turning down the chance to leapfrog from the Premiership to the Premier League under Bielsa.
