MOT View: Fantastic bit of business as key Leeds first-team star signs new two-year deal

The official Leeds United Twitter page put up a post about Pablo Hernandez on Tuesday afternoon and asked fans how they would describe the “Spanish wizard”?

The greatest hits video that accompanied the post includes his wonder-striker against West Brom and Leeds fans piled on to show their appreciation.

There were plenty of fans that were reading more into the post, though, and saw it as a sign of a new contract annoucnement.

And they were bang on the money. 30 minutes after the first tweet was posted, confirmation of his new two-year deal was posted. That will see Hernandez stay at Elland Road until 2022 and it’s a fantastic bit of business for the club.

Hernandez might be 34 but he played some of the best football of his career last season, scoring 12 goals and adding 12 assists in the Championship. He also became only the second Leeds player ever to be named as Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons.

And, while this campaign has been stop-start because of injury, the team has missed him while he’s been on the sidelines. Despite that, he’s still scored two goals and added two assists in just eight starts – stats that put him on course for a repeat of last season.

Plaudits came raining in from fans as you’d expect and Leeds skipper Liam Cooper was one of the first of the players to congratulate his teammate.

Hernandez played 45 minutes in the Under-23s win against Barnsley on Monday and that could mean that he’s homing in on a first start in the league since the 1-1 draw against Derby in September.

A goal from the Spanish wizard would be a fantastic way to mark his new deal with Leeds.

Leeds travel to Kenilworth Road for their next game in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.
