Michael Owen makes bizarre claim on Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier
Michael Owen claimed on TV coverage of the Leeds United match against West Ham that he watched Illan Meslier in the academy when he was 16.
This isn’t possible because the Frenchman joined the Whites when he was 19, initially on a season-long loan.
So, we have no idea what Owen is going about and would it really be that hard to do some basic research? This would have allowed him to avoid making this stupid error.
Speaking on the Premier League’s coverage for non-UK viewers of the match, he said: “I remember watching him when he was about 16 at Leeds’ academy, and he just looked the part.”
Owen makes a fool of himself.
The fact he says this with so much confidence makes this comment even funnier, and it is incredible he is being paid to be a pundit.
The 21-year-old has only had two full seasons at Elland Road. He has never played for the Under-18s, and this information is very easy to find.
Ultimately, it just makes Owen look unprofessional, and he should know that Meslier arrived in Leeds when he was 19.

Instead, he has just made up some story about the academy and tried to present it as fact. It is genuinely incredible, and you have to wonder why anyone still hires him when he comes out with stuff like that.
You don’t need to be a Leeds expert or super fan to realise that Meslier has never played for Leeds’ academy and hasn’t actually been with the Whites for that long.
