Micah Richards threw his phone after Leeds United loss vs Fulham – ‘It was a disaster’

Micah Richards was fuming after Leeds United’s defeat to Fulham on Saturday.

Leeds’ wait for their second win of the season went on at Craven Cottage, with Fulham securing a 1-0 win over Daniel Farke’s side.

It means that the Whites have picked up four points from the same number of games, but have also only scored in one of them.

While that lack of goalscoring threat is the biggest concern for Leeds, Richards had one of his own, and it left him fuming on Saturday night.

Gabriel Gudmundsson own goal gifts Fulham three points

It was a day to forget for Gabriel Gudmundsson, whose last-minute header in his own box flew past Karl Darlow, giving the hosts a late, late win.

Gudmundsson was devastated after Leeds’ defeat, as you would be in those circumstances, though Richards had a similar emotion for a very different reason.

Leeds’ stats vs Fulham

Leeds had several good options in Fantasy Premier League, and Richards seemingly opted for Gumundsson in his own team, in a decision that backfired at the weekend.

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, he said: “Honestly, it was a disaster.

“I was listening to it, and it was a clean sheet, I was thinking ‘absolutely buzzing’, and then it went to the 91st minute, I thought I’ve still got a clean sheet here.

“And Gudmundsson, he’s only £4million, he’s a cheap defender, and he’s done really well. If you concede, you still get defensive contributions.

“But, to score an own goal, he got zero points. I actually threw my phone.”

Gabriel Gudmundsson will bounce back for Leeds

Leeds’ summer business was massively underwhelming, but the arrival of Gudmundsson was one of the rare coups pulled off by the 49ers.

Via Sofascore, the Swedish international has won 51 per cent of his defensive duels so far this season, though he only has one clean sheet to show for it.

With an 80 per cent pass accuracy, he has been tidy on the ball for Leeds, which, in this system, is going to be crucial.

The forward line is the concern for the Whites, and if that can be rectified, you can expect to see much more from Gumundsson from an attacking point of view.

He will be well aware of the impact his error had against Fulham, but mentality is going to be key in Leeds‘ fight for survival, and he needs to show a strong one over the next week or so.
