Micah Richards claims Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford should be in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the European Championships this summer.
Only Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah and Bruno Fernandes have scored more Premier League goals than Bamford, 27, this season, with the striker netting his 14th goal of the campaign on Friday night in Leeds’ win at Fulham.
However, Bamford was overlooked by Southgate for the most-recent England squad with Kane, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ollie Watkins being chosen ahead of him.
Former Manchester City and Aston Villa defender Richards is a massive fan of Bamford and claims he should make the cut for the Euros in the summer.
“I love Bamford. I just think Bamford offers something different,” Richards said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club this week.
“I love his link-up play. He holds the line really well. Calvert-Lewin does it as well. Watkins holds the line.”
Richards added: “If you are asking me, would I take Bamford [to the Euros]? I would 100 per cent take Bamford. I’d take them both (Bamford and Kane).
“He’s got three strikers. I would have taken him in this squad to see what he can do.
“For me, he’s one of the most underrated strikers in the Premier League.
“If you actually watch him, his movement and his lovely touches around the box. His left foot, you don’t know which way he’s going to turn.”
Bamford for the Three Lions
We’re going to bang the drum for Bamford no matter what because there’s nothing better than seeing a Leeds player turning out for England.
It used to happen quite often in the 1990s and early 2000s but England call-ups have understandably petered out during our time in the Championship.
Kalvin Phillips has already established his place in Southgate’s squad – imagine if Bamford or even Luke Ayling could also join him at the Euros this summer.
Bamford deserves a spot in the squad.
We’re not saying that Watkins doesn’t because he’s had a good season with Aston Villa and a link-up with Jack Grealish could be something that Southgate has set his sights on.
Calvert-Lewin has performed well for Everton for over a year now and Kane is an obvious pick as he’s England’s captain and the best goalscorer the Three Lions have got.
Bamford is definitely in the discussion though, which is great to see and we fully agree with Richard that he should be 100 per cent in the squad.
