Micah Richards blasts Junior Firpo in Leeds loss v West Ham

Leeds United crashed to a devastating 2-1 loss in their Premier League clash against West Ham on Saturday.

The Whites were down to the bare bones at Elland Road but put in a marvellous display only to be hit by a last-gasp sucker-punch.

Micah Richards was impressed, but he picked out defending by Junior Firpo that cost his side massively in the context of the game.

Speaking on Match of the Day last night, Richards savaged the positioning of Firpo and his acceptance to leave Jarrod Bowen alone.

“Firpo will just come into your picture here,” he said.

“He’s playing left-back, he’s gone one-on-one, but he stays there. He leaves massive space, Phillips goes out and Bowen is by himself.

“Cooper doesn’t want to be isolated, but he tries to get in a position and they end up with an own goal – he’s not doing anything.”

Poor.

We remember just sitting at Elland Road and scratching our heads as that first goal went in to tie the game.

Looking back at the clips, it is even worst.

Firpo leaves a huge space at left-back and follows Pablo Fornals to the other side of the pitch, and before he realises, it is far too late.

The Spaniard needed to pass his man and get into position, or in this system of Marcelo Bielsa, you will get picked apart and taken advantage of.

West Ham did exactly that, and it eventually went in off Firpo to add more pain to the incident for the defender.

We can’t complain too much given our serious problems with injuries and suspensions, but when goals such as this that are so avoidable go in, it is hard not to be disappointed.
