McCoist joins growing calls for Leeds' Bamford to receive first England call up

Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford should be called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad on Thursday after proving his doubters wrong, according to Ally McCoist.

Southgate is set to announce his squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers on Thursday and there is a realistic chance of Bamford being given a first international nod.

McCoist, speaking on TalkSPORT, claims the injuries to other English strikers have paved the way for a first call up, though the has also earned the chance with his goals this year.

“I would, absolutely,” McCoist told Alan Brazil when asked if Bamford should be called up.

“Particularly with the injuries to Tammy Abraham and Danny Ings. You’d think automatically Bamford has given himself an opportunity to impress Gareth.

“The big question mark at the start of the season was can he score goals in the top flight and he’s proved to everybody that he can.”

There are still some top quality forwards that Bamford will have to compete against for a spot but a call up for him has never looked more likely.

Harry Kane will be the first name on the teamsheet as England captain and players like Marcus Rashford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin won’t be far behind him.

Though Southgate prefers to play Rashford as a wide attacker so it will only likely be Kane and Calvert-Lewin for Bamford to compete with.

Abraham would’ve been nailed on for a selection if he was fit though questions would’ve been raised if Ings was picked as his form is patchy at best at the moment.

If our star man is called up, he will surely be given a decent amount of time on the pitch.

Games against San Marino and Albania should be a breeze for the Three Lions and if Southgate wants to give Bamford a chance to score on his debut, those are the games to play him.

We’d love nothing more than to see Bamford picked, roll on 2pm.
