Max Wober tells agent not to call him as Leeds United defender’s future left unresolved

Max Wober is planning to ignore calls from his agent for the next four weeks to concentrate on the Euros with his Leeds United future still unclear.

The Austrian defender told Kleine Zeitung in his home country (31 May) that he had hoped for clarity on where he would be playing next season prior to the international tournament, but will now not be focusing on the issue until after his involvement is over in Germany this summer.

Wober, 26, spent last season on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach after exercising a loan-release clause in his Elland Road contract following Premier League relegation, but the decision on what happens next rests with Daniel Farke and the club.

He said, translated to English: “My aim was to answer the club question before the Euros. But it is what it is now. I told my manager that he doesn’t need to call me or tell me anything in the next four weeks. I want to play in the Euros now. After that we’ll see where it goes…

“It will also depend on what they say. But they will probably have to digest this playoff defeat for a week or two. We will see how they want to position themselves and whether I am in their plans or not.”

Should Daniel Farke bring loanee back to Leeds United?

The cleanest outcome for all of the players who left on loan a year ago would probably be for Leeds United to sell them and move on, given the potential for bad feeling over the initial exits.

Angus Kinnear indicated the hope was to see loanees improve their transfer value and depart at a later date when speaking to the Square Ball last season (7 September) but for the most part that doesn’t look like it has gone to plan.

From Wober’s perspective he has arguably been vindicated in his decision to leave Elland Road after being named in Ralf Rangnick’s provisional Austria squad, even if the manner of his departure left some upset in his wake, although it appears previous negotiations over a permanent exit weren’t successful.

With Joe Rodon’s permanent move from Tottenham potentially off the table after the failure to gain promotion, Ethan Ampadu possibly a target for sale and Liam Cooper’s contract expiring, there could be a place for the ex-Red Bull Salzburg captain in Farke’s squad.

Wober doesn’t sound especially enthused about returning and playing for Leeds United in the second tier, but may be open to it if an agreement with the manager can be reached and there isn’t an international tournament on the horizon.

The Whites will have to make some difficult decisions on who they are forced to cash in on during the transfer window, and those who thrived for the most part in England last term could be more in demand.
